Laser treatment for retinopathy of prematurity is the best treatment for ROP. Done in a timely manner when indicated for Type I ROP, the results of laser treatment are very good and ROP usually regresses. In severe cases, advanced cases and late referrals, ROP may progress and laser may not be sufficient to manage ROP.
In most countries, laser treatment is performed under topical anaesthesia. The procedure usually lasts from 15 min to 1 1/2 hours depending on the extent of treatment required and the zone of the disease. Laser treatment is performed by expert eye surgeons who are well versed with treatment using laser indirect ophthalmoscope. The eyes treated with laser spots which may range from 100 to 3000 in number.
Post laser treatment the eyes are prescribed eyedrops to maintain lubrication and prevent inflammation after the laser treatment. Done a timely manner, the results of laser treatment are very good and will lead to regression of the disease. However, if disease has progressed to advance stage, then laser treatment might not be enough and ROP might progress to advanced stages.
